As I continue to look for my first job as a Media Graduate from Birmingham City University, I have decided to do something a bit different from what I usually post on my blog.
Dear Hiring Manager,
I am Umar Hassan, an award-winning Freelance Journalist and Data Analyst with over four years of experience. In that time, I have had bylines and articles published for several digital and print publications such as The Scratch, The Checkered Flag, The Irish World and The Asian World as well as having experience working with ITV and Sky UK.
My main passion is working in the sports media and data analytics industries using tools such as R, SQL and Tableau to generate dashboards. As an active practitioner who publishes his data visualisations on Tableau Public through initiatives such as Makeover Monday and attending Tableau User Groups to strengthen my Tableau skills and knowledge of the software.
Being an active journalist, I have covered numerous events whether they have been political debates, protests, event launches and sporting tournaments such as the Silverstone Classic and the AEGON Classic women’s tennis tournament. I’m enthusiastic about applying mobile journalism techniques and data to add context to the stories I currently produce whilst focusing on creating professional, exciting editorial whilst regularly blogging about various subjects on my website.
This has led to me being nominated for several awards in which I won the Media Student of the Year Award at the 2016 Team BCU Awards for my work as a Sports Sub Editor for The Scratch, as well as nominations for the Rod Piling and Trinity Mirror Online Journalism Awards at the 2017 School of Media Graduate Show. My list of awards don’t stop there.
Being a Student Academic Leader for three years of university has taught me to be a good listener whilst collecting student feedback to improve the quality of the course material. This has helped me greatly with my interviewing techniques when working on stories as I am able to convey what the interviewee is explaining to me with great interest which led to me becoming a runner-up in the 2017 BCU Extra Mile Awards for Student Representative of the Year.
Also during that period, I won as part of School of Media Level Up Mentors two awards which included the Team of the Year and Vice Chancellor and Students’ Union Awards for my work as part of the mentoring team at the 2017 BCU Extra Mile Awards. Managing projects and tasks to tight deadlines whilst collaborating with staff and mentors was crucial to the programme’s success with first year students.
If you are interested in what I can bring to your company or agency whether that is media, journalism, PR, analytics, Tableau or content creation, please contact me on 07741457180 or via email at firstname.lastname@example.org and I would be happy to talk with you.
Thank you for taking the time to read through this post and I look forward to your response.
